The canton of Parrita is located in the province of Puntarenas, on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, bordering to the east with the canton of Quepos and to the west with Garabito. The head city of this canton is Parrita, which constitutes a single district by itself.

The economy of Parrita is based mainly on the agricultural production of African oil palm for export, pineapple, banana, melon, watermelon and rice, thanks to the short but mighty Parrita River that crosses this coastal valley, thus causing the dragging of sediments, which that benefits the agriculture of its plains.

Tourism also plays an important role in its economy, being one of the cantons that is growing the most in Costa Rica due to new tourist projects and hotel zones, in addition to having incomparable beaches such as Playa Esterillos.

This visionary path continued in the 1980s when the country chose sustainability as its primary development model, increasing forest protection and subsequently boosting its GDP.

The quality of life in Costa Rica is best exemplified by Nicoya, which is home to one of the world's five Blue Zones. Its inhabitants are among the healthiest and longest-lived populations globally, a result of balanced physical and mental health, a traditional diet, family respect, deep faith, constant mobility, and a clear purpose in life.

This foundation of well-being is supported by a long-standing dedication to learning; in fact, primary education in Costa Rica has been free and mandatory for all citizens since 1869.
