The canton of Parrita is located in the province of Puntarenas, on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, bordering to the east with the canton of Quepos and to the west with Garabito. The head city of this canton is Parrita, which constitutes a single district by itself.

The economy of Parrita is based mainly on the agricultural production of African oil palm for export, pineapple, banana, melon, watermelon and rice, thanks to the short but mighty Parrita River that crosses this coastal valley, thus causing the dragging of sediments, which that benefits the agriculture of its plains.

Tourism also plays an important role in its economy, being one of the cantons that is growing the most in Costa Rica due to new tourist projects and hotel zones, in addition to having incomparable beaches such as Playa Esterillos.

In 1948, Costa Rica became the first country in the world to abolish the army and invest those resources in health and education.

Nicoya, Costa Rica, is home to one of the five Blue Zones of the world. Its residents are amongst the healthiest and more long-lived populations, thanks to their good physical and mental health, a healthy traditional diet, respect for the family, deep faith, constant mobility, and a purpose in life. Primary education in Costa Rica was made free of charge and mandatory for all citizens in 1869.
